THE BACK STORY

Stephen has held senior management positions in a number of multinational corporations, across a variety of industries. He has been associated with the steel and raw materials industry for over 23 years, developing extensive experience dealing with overseas suppliers, including compliance to contractual terms, product standards, and anti-dumping legislation.  Much of Stephen’s experience was developed during his regional role over 14 years as Corporate Development Director at Commercial Metals Company in Asia Pacific; through his corporate independent consulting projects; and more recently as Boardmember of the Australian Steel Association.
With numerous acquisitions and divestitures under his belt, Stephen is able to offer valuable insight from conducting market and commercial analyses externally, to working internally to gain the tactical and financial approval and ensure the responsibility of the all-important integration planning process. It is this commitment to ‘getting things done’ that has seen Stephen also develop a strong informal skill set, such as when it comes to the practice of law and navigating the often complex legal elements of such projects. Stephen’s real strength shines in mentoring staff to help them achieve their best, and therefore the best possible outcomes for the company and stakeholders.
With experience managing large teams spread across almost all business units of major multi-national organisations, to years as a sole trader at the helm PearsonsWorld.com, Stephen Pearson has carved out a reputation as a successful and innovative senior-level leader for companies both large and small.

Business & Human Rights

(CSR, ESG & Modern Slavery)

Increasingly the business and consumer worlds are focusing on the need to do business sustainably – that is, conducting business in a matter that protects the population as individuals, and protects the environment. The scope of responsibility of businesses in modern times is ever evolving… many past practices are becoming unacceptable – but how long is this piece of string? What can I do in my business?
The concept is obviously not new but has grown in importance over recent years. A business’ actual and perceived performance in dealing with people and the environment can impact its financial standing, its marketability, its ability to raise funds, its share price. There is a growing trend toward responsible and ethical business investment.
Businesses are compelled through government regulation or commercial reality, to establish, implement, monitor and report on their corporate ethics strategy – the umbrella term being Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
An effective ethics strategy is a key risk minimisation tool, along with quality, safety, etc – businesses require a framework against which to manage their risks and opportunities, and this is often called Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG). Modern Slavery Legislation (MSL) and the need for robust policies, procedures and compliance monitoring is an integral part of the effective implementation of the people elements of CSR and ESG.
The Australian Steel Association (ASA) has published for its members the “Modern Slavery Guide 2022”, which was co-designed with Australia’s leading independent law firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth, to provide guidance on members’ roles, responsibilities and compliance requirements under modern slavery legislation.
